On Saturday, November 26th we held our 4th annual Teen Art Show Gala. In November 2011, the City of Pickering invited students to submit their artwork and by doing so they were judged in a series of categories. The Art work was on display at Petticoat Creek Community Centre from Nov. 14th-26th and the Awards Gala was held on Nov. 26th. It was a huge success and featured several Teen Artists as well as professional guest artist.

Waterfront

The Town of Ajax's waterfront is a gem of unspoiled beauty, with six kilometers of unspoiled park land stretching across the Town's southern border along the shores of Lake Ontario. It is accessible to the public, with bridges spanning creeks, natural and maintained areas.

This land, totaling over 150 acres, is used by residents and visitors who come to enjoy the scenic views, picnics, engage in recreational activities in the open spaces, and utilize the multi-use trail for walking, jogging, cycling and in-line skating.

The asphalt trail, which is over seven kilometers in length, is part of the Waterfront Trail that runs from Hamilton to Belleville, and is also part of the Trans-Canada Trail. It remains one of the most picturesque waterfronts in southern Ontario. The 100,000 people who live in Ajax are delighted to keep it this way.

The Pickering Waterfront is home to an outstanding series of public spaces including the Petticoat Creek Conservation Area, Rotary Frenchman's Bay West Park, Bruce Handscombe Park, Progress Frenchman's Bay East Park, Millennium Square, Beachfront Park, Homeplace & Alex Robertson Park and Pickering's Waterfront Trail.

The Western Gateway officially opened in June 2010. A new pedestrian bridge is perched high above Rouge Beach providing an incredible vista of Lake Ontario in a serene boardwalk style setting.

In a residential lease, there is no way to end a monthly lease if the tenant does not agree, unless the landlord has a legitimate reason, such as the tenant is not paying the rent or the landlord needs the place for a member of their immediate family. At this time every year I feel very emotional. I’m dedicated to put in writing how thankful I am for the life I am able to live today because of the Brave Men & Women who Fought, Died and Are Still Fighting for my Freedom!

Year after year as I stand listening to the ceremony, my emotions grow more intense each year. As I watch the many people around me I observe how this brings us together to say our thanks and show our appreciation. But mostly I see how we reach out to our loved ones, hugging and holding them as if to say I have you and my life because of the sacrifice of so many. Truly expressing our appreciation to all the Brave Men and Women who left their loved ones and their lives, seems almost impossible!

However impossible it may seem, I personally take a veteran to lunch, and or call a veteran and personally thank them. I always buy dozens of poppies for each member of my family. We wear them with Great Pride and Thanks

Why the Poppy?

The association between the poppy and war dates back to the Napoleonic wars, when a writer saw a field of poppies growing over the graves of fallen soldiers.

During the Battle of Ypres in 1915, Canadian Lt.-Col. John McCrae was inspired to write the poem, In Flanders Fields, on sighting the poppies growing beside a grave of a close friend who had died in battle.

The poem was a great inspiration in adopting the poppy as the Flower of Remembrance in Canada, France, the U.S, Britain and Commonwealth countries.

The first poppies were distributed in Canada in 1921.

Today the volunteer donations from the distribution of millions of poppies is an important source of revenue for the Royal Canadian Legion that goes toward helping ex-servicemen and women buy food, and obtain shelter and medical attention.
